GOS Institute of Child Health Claud Worth Rising Star Lecture awarded during the BIPOSA Annual Meeting

The Child Health Research CIO Trust based at the GOS Institute of Child Health UCL (GOS ICH) is delighted to sponsor the new Claud Worth Rising Star Lecture to be delivered annually at the BIPOSA conference

Background and aim

To recognise, support and encourage our rising stars making a difference through research and evidence-based innovation in paediatric ophthalmology or child vision science

Lecture and award

The awardee will give a lecture of 45minutes duration describing their career to date, their research or innovation work so far, and its impact and their plans over the next 5 years

Number and frequency

Only one award will be made per applicant. Yearly.

Financial arrangements and value

The lecturer will be awarded £6000 personally to use any way they wish. This can include registration, travel and accommodation costs to attend the BIPOSA annual conference to give the lecture, as no additional funds will be provided for these

Eligibility Criteria

    • Any child ‘vision and eyes’ clinician, clinical academic or scientist within 5 to 7 years of their consultant or senior lecturer/associate professor appointment.
    • Evidence of delivering high impact through their research or innovation work in any / all of the following domains: knowledge/understanding of disease, clinical practice, service delivery or policy.
    • Impacts must be through research or innovation in any / all of the domains above in the UK or internationally but must address the visual health of children and young people (<18 years) or childhood onset eye disease.
    • Evidence of a secure upward trajectory in their work and impacts.

Judging criteria

Members of the BIPOSA Executive, representatives of GOS Institute of Child Health and a representative from the BIPOSA conference host team/organising committee for the year in which the Lecture will be delivered will assess importance, novelty and breath of impacts in each domain (understanding/knowledge, clinical practice, service delivery and policy).

Awarding committee

BIPOSA and GOS Institute of Child Health reserve the right not to make award if the applications are incomplete or unsatisfactory.

Applications must be received by the deadline for the relevant round.

BIPOSA and GOS Institute of Child Health decision is final and GOS Institute of Child Health has a veto

Decision and award made end of JUNE

Awardee’s committment

The award holder must attend and present at the meeting. If for any reason this is not possible, the money should be returned.

    • A statement explaining the nominee’s research or innovation work and describing its impact on knowledge/understanding of disease, clinical practice, service delivery or policy (350 words maximum)
    • An accompanying document providing verifiable evidence of impacts. (1 page maximum)
    • An up-to-date CV
